Salmond's papal fallibility...

Il Papa, Benedict the Umpteenth, shocked and delighted the congregated throng in St Peter's Square a while back by donning a scarlet cappallo romano - more evocatively styled a saturno hat - during one of his public, weekly ministrations. Some of the less-well-learned in the vagaries of Roman clerical fashion wondered if the Holy Father had finally outed himself as a cowboy aficionado. In fact this wide-brimmed gold-spangled, wildly-camp outdoor hat was not an innovation, but apparently used to be worn far more regularly by Benedict's predecessors. Indeed, if you've ever taken a turn through Italy, you may have spotted passing priests, capped in the black cappelli of the common clergy.  Here is the glorious sicht:




In wholly coincidental news, Alex Salmond, the Maximum Eck, was in Delhi this week for the Commonwealth Games. And it seems as if on the way, he secured a consultation with the Pope's tailor. Here is the Holy Father - sporting his own saltire-hued saturno - offering a benediction to one of the gold-graced faithful...
